Advice for happiness

Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, or just suddenly through the day I can be hit by a wave of sadness, emptiness or lack of motivation. This could be due to the fact that emotional dysregulation is part borderline personality, meaning that emotions run are heightened and run up and down a million times a second. But to be honest, I think any human being, "normal" or not, will be hit by these feelings at least a couple of times a week. So here is what I have taught myself to do, to pull myself out of these dark moments

I am a HUGE fan of reading, I love words full stop. It is amazing that thoughts that are voiceless, can be written down and shared with others to help inspire and educate us, our brains are truly wonderful complex creations. So whenever I feel down I go back to a book or a quote from a book that inspires me and reminds me how fascinating, funny and beautiful life can be. Here are a few quotes from a range of books that I hope you might remember, to inspire you.

p.s. it often helps to write them in a book or stick them on your wall as a nice reminder

"No one can lose sight of what he desires. Even if there are moments when he believes the world and the others are stronger. The secret is this: do not surrender"
-  Paulo Coelho 'The Fifth Mountain'

"I like flaws and feel more comfortable around people who have them. I myself am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions."

- Augusten Burroughs 'Magical Thinking'

"Love is a one-way street. Love, like respect isn't something you get; it's something you give"

- Gregory Roberts 'Shantaram'

“You ought to be thankful a hole heaping lot, for The places and people you're lucky your not!”

- Dr Seuss 'Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?"

"You see, you closed your eyes. That was the difference. Sometimes you cannot believe what you see, you have to believe what you feel. And if you are ever going to have other people trust you, you must feel that you can trust them, too--even when you’re in the dark. Even when you’re falling"
- Mitch Albom 'Tuesdays with Morrie"

“And one of the elders of the city , said , speak to us of good and evil.
And he answered : You are good in countless ways , and you are not evil when you are not good .”
- Khalil Gibran 'The Prophet'

"Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance."
- Eckhart Tolle 'The Power of Now'

"Nothing in the world is ever completely wrong. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day."
- Paulo Coelho 'Brida'

"Everything you'll ever need to know is within you; the secrets of the universe are imprinted on the cells of your body."
- Dan Millman 'Way of the Peaceful Warrior'

"your mind is like an unsafe neighborhood; don't go there alone."
 - Augusten Burroughs ' Dry

"I can't tell if you're serious or not,' said the driver.
I won't know myself until I find out if life is serious or not,' said Trout. 'It's dangerous, I know, and it can hurt a lot. That doesn't necessarily mean it's serious, too."
 - Kurt Vonnnegut 'Breakfast of Champion'

"Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared."
 - Herman Hesse 'Siddartha'

The Shantaram quote is my favourite, because it's probably my most favourite book ever. Such a brilliant read.

    1. I started reading Shantaram in a mental hospital, believe it or not, they had stuck me on strong nicotine patches and valium, so I didnt quite flow with all of it, so I have a really strange connection to that book, I must reread it now :)

I followed you back on twitter and thank you for commenting :)
